What to think, when you drink single malts - by Kevin Brauch

Tasting whisky is more scientific than you think... but it doesn’t have to be. Luckily, it’s just as simple and a fun as tasting wine. Before our taste-buds can get in on the action it’s our noses that actually have the first task. With our sense of smell being eight times more acute than that of taste only after we have inhaled some of a whiskies aromas does the tongue get a chance to register the beauty of single malt. Beware: some whiskies are quite powerful; enough that you nose can suffer if you inhale too hard, so always approach the snifter gently but with enthusiasm.

One of the looming questions with single malt always seems to be "How should single malt whisky be drunk?" The aficionados all agree -- only neat or with water. Try the whisky neat at first, then repeat the nosing and tasting process by adding the purest water available (still, or branch water but not sparkling). Use a very small amount of water at first, then add more and taste, until a personal preference is achieved -- usually not more than equal parts, but there's no hard and fast rule. It's all about personalizing the whisky experience to the individual's taste (just like our trip!)

Slainte Mhath! (Good Health).
