Join wine educator, international wine judge, author, and radio & TV personality Dr. Linda Bramble on this special “Women & Wine” trip to one of the world’s hottest new wine frontiers– Sicily! Join us October 26 to November 1. From the earliest of times, Sicily was the crossroads of European, North African and western Asian civilization, and each continent has left its mark here. Phoenician monuments, Greek temples, Byzantine churches, Norman-Arab castles and Baroque palaces are just a few of the things you'll find in Sicily.
Sicilian wines are part of a cuisine shaped by a dozen civilizations. Many of Sicily's best table wines are a perfect complement to non-Italian cuisines, while the dessert wines, brandies and regional liqueurs (made from lemons, oranges, strawberries and all the flavors of Sicily) are fantastic --traditional yet mildly eccentric. Linda will share her passion for wine and the culture that surrounds its. Enjoy a week of wine tasting, sightseeing, olive oil tasting and an authentic Sicilian cooking class and so much more. THE WINES OF SICILY by Dr. Linda Bramble
Sicily is one of the oldest new wine regions in the world. With a
2000-year history of wine behind them, they are just now
emerging as producers of some of the most fashionable wines on
the market. No longer best known for the distillate-fortified Marsala, or for the ten million
hectoliters of bulk wine they sent to northern Italy and France,
today they are the European epi-center of new sleek whites, and
spicy, aromatic reds. Several reasons have contributed to this transformation. A new generation of Sicilians started to become aware of their potential. They enrolled in viticulture and oenology programs in Italy and abroad. They reasoned what education and better care of their vineyards, improved clones and optimal harvesting did for Aussie wine, Sicilian wines could benefit as well. The growing conditions were similar. Investors from northern Italy, France, Australia and California saw the potential and planted new vineyards. With generous subsidies from the EU Sicilians themselves invested in modern technologies to control fermentation, gently extract tannins, stir caps and irrigate arid land. At Sicily’s Regional Institute for Viticulture and Wine, experiments are being conducted on new clones and indigenous yeasts. Sicily’s real potential is yet to be realized. Although international varieties such as Chardonnay, Merlot and Syrah are grown, its producers are setting their sights on protecting the identity of their native varieties. Whites such as Cataratto, Grillo and Grecanico, and reds such as Nero d’Avola, Nerello Mascalese and Frappato may be unfamiliar today, but not for long. |
