Two quick notes of thanks to Gremolata readers this week. First, thank you for your emails on cardoons, other exotic ingredients and independent gourmet stores outside of Toronto. We're busy compiling the results (still time to send in more to info@gremolata.com) and will publish them in the next Gremolata Update. Second, thank you to all the attendees of our first Gremolata Wine and Cheese tasting at Cobalt. We had a great time sipping RKW Imports' selection of wines, munching on Andy Shay's expertly matched Canadian farmhouse cheeses and chatting with connoisseur extraordinaire, Gina Mallet. Stay tuned for information on our next event! - Malcolm Jolley, Publisher

You read it hear first, folks. South African wines are taking over. According to Wine.co.za, South African wine exports to Canada rose by 40% in 2004 (and exports to the US by 60%). Gremolata caught up with Natalie and asked how it all happened...[more]. Only weeks since being embroiled in a credibility scandal (see Gremolata Update 10) Michelin has announced plans to publish a Red Guide to New York City...[more from The New York Times].

Glemolata requests your help: become a Gremolata P.I. (Purveyor Inquisitor) and send your gourmet food sightings to info@gremolata.com. In particular, we're looking for sightings of cardoons in GTA stores. This silvery cross between celery and artichoke makes a fantastic soup, a wonderful gratin and should be coming into season (at least it would if we all lived within 50 miles of the Mediterranean). Gremolata last saw cardoon stalks at Fiesta Farms on Christie about five years ago. Please send us any interesting foods you come across in the next few weeks and we'll feature your finds in our Fresh Food section. We're also looking for interesting independently owned food shops, especially those outside of downtown Toronto. Fresh in Flesherton is a great example.

The Goats are back in Ontario! The 2003 Goats do Roam in Villages (LCBO# 566851) is the slightly more sophisticated cousin of the very popular Goats do Roam Red featured in Gremolata last December. In keeping with the Wines of Charles Back's Rhône theme, the Goats do Roam in Villages is a step up from the Red, much like a Rhône Villages is to a simple Rhône. At $14.95 a bottle, this label offers exceptional value and is sure to sell quickly. Praise for the Goats do Roam in Villages has been quick: Rod Phillips gave it a four-star rating in the latest winecurrent.com newsletter, noting "It's got good fruit, good structure, good everything, and it gets a very good rating for its price." The Wine Spectator featured it as a "Wine of the Week" and gave it a 90...[more].

Anthony Bourdain called Gina Mallet's Last Chance to Eat: The Fate of Taste in a Fast Food World "an invaluable antidote to the dark forces who want to deprive us of the good stuff and an acknowledgement of the pleasures of a few simple, good things." This week, in the second instalment of Gremolata's look at Mallet and her part memoir part expose, we caught up with the author to ask her a few questions about some of those good things and the state of taste today...[more]
Gourmet Media Extra: David Leite has published an excellent in-depth interview with Paula Wolfert on his site, leitesculinaria.com.
