Overview
Ginseng is a type of herb grown in northern regions of Asia as well as in parts of North America - particularly Ontario. The English word ginseng derives from the Chinese term "rénshēn" literally translated to mean "man root" - referring to the root's characteristic forked shape which resembles the legs of a man. Taste is considered the barometer of quality, the stronger the better, generally. Ginseng is a potent herb and the root offers a strong degree of flavor "heat" that can tingle noses and promote increased energy.
Both American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) and Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng) roots are used in herbal remedies as adaptogens, aphrodisiacs, and stimulants. The root has also been known to be a natural herb for treating type II diabetes and sexual dysfunction in males. Commercially, it is often available in dried form, either whole or sliced. It is often steeped to make medicinal teas in China.
