Overview
This well-known berry is the epitome of the summer harvest. The strawberry gets its name from the beds of straw that these delicate berries were placed on for protection during harvesting and market shipping. Found all around the world in temperate climates, both the wild and cultivated species are highly sought after. Despite their smaller size, the wild strawberry is highly prized for its often superior taste. Strawberries are enjoyed as excellent preserves and as key ingredients in many baked goods and confections but often the best thought way to eat them is fresh and raw, sometimes with cream. In France however, sour cream is the preferred topping and in Italy they are eaten mainly with wine or balsamic vinegar.
