Overview
A flamingo-pink, Mediterranean landmark chiseled into the blue Florida sky, accented by Moorish bell towers, imperial turrets, clock tower, sun-splashed terraces and rows and rows of Palladian windows encased with French doors. The rose-colored sandcastle opened in 1928 as the Gulf playground for America's pampered rich. F. Scott Fitzgerald, Lou Gehrig, Clarence Darrow and other elite fancied in its frivolity for 14 years. The realism of war and depression shortly crumbled the fairytale to a mere shadow (1942). For three decades, The Don served as a convalescent center and VA headquarters. Miraculously, in 1973, it was re-sculpted and rose again as the Pink Lady. Today, it is a center for several of Tampa Bay's celebrity and culinary events.
