"Food To Go" in The County
By Cynthia Peters
Eating outside is one of the joys of summer. Whether it’s in
your backyard, on a boat or at a park, dining al fresco can be a wonderful experience to share with family and
friends.
Finding the perfect setting to dine is easy in the County.
With many waterside parks and beaches throughout the region, you have a wide
variety of sizes and scenes. For families, places such as the Sandbanks or North Beach are popular destinations. For a more secluded setting
for couples, Lake on the Mountain
might be a romantic getaway. Visit the County’s web site to search for your perfect
destination at www.pec.on.ca
When you decide on your favorite spot, planning the meal that
suits your family or friends is the next step. When I reflect on my childhood
picnics, I recall my Mother’s homemade potato salad, cold roasted chicken,
macaroni salad and tea biscuits. While all good, today’s picnic can offer a lot
more in regards to variety and tastes. If you are renting a cottage in the area
this summer you may have the space and time to prepare your own dishes too. Pick up a baguette or two and some local
fruit to round off your meal. Also a bottle of our local chilled rose would hit
the spot on a hot summer afternoon. Some of my favorites include Huff’s Rose and Long Dog’s Tumbling Stone.
If you are making the County a weekend vacation, there are
some great take-away solutions that make fine picnic fare. Gourmet to Go in Picton offers a ready to go boxed lunch called
“The County Exploration Kit”. It includes a freshly prepared sandwich, small
salad, dessert, drink and County maps and brochures to help you find your
way. Down the street at Pinch Gourmet, there is a wide
selection of sandwiches, salads, charcuterie, cheeses and desserts that travel
well. Or is you want a local dog, drop in at Buddha Dog a pick up few mini beef hotdogs with local cheeses and
sauces. In Belleville area, L’Auberge de
France offers bistro style items from homemade quiches to croque monsieur
sandwiches and if your lucky enough on to get there in time on Saturday,
heavenly croissants. If seafood is your preference, look no further to Maritime Lobster Express for a fresh
lobster roll to go or other prepared foods.
So whatever to plan to serve, bring along a few blankets, a
fun tablecloth and of course some bug spray. And on your way home, you might
want to stop in for an ice cream treat at Slickers,
now with two locations -- downtown
Bloomfield and at Highway 33 and 1.
Enjoy!
