Belleville Farmer's Market
By Jason Burkitt
After scraping ice off of my windshield, I was surprised to still see many of the farmers at Belleville’s Farmers’ Market still selling their produce. Though a few of them have shutdown until spring, many are still selling onions, Brussels sprouts, squash, apples, honey, maple syrup from this past spring, and of course preserves!
Cedar Creek Farms had the largest selection of preserves, ranging from old standbys such as strawberry jam to sweet pickles and red pepper jam.
Teddy Bear Farms, the only purveyor of Buffalo meat in Hastings and Prince Edward counties, has recently finished off their herd.
Jackie, a local baker and farmer who runs Jackie’s Market Stand, is still baking her loaves of bread and offering a large selection from pumpernickel to challah.
Shelter Valley’s stand is surrounded by a sea of baskets of apples including varieties such as MacIntosh, Spy, Liberty, Granny Smith, and Delicious all nearly spilling onto Pinnacle Street.
Quinte Isle Farms is still offering plump brussel sprouts, each nearly the size of an apple, still on their stalks.
Wilson’s offers their brand of honey, and Foster Home Farm with their brand of maple syrup.
Charlen Organic Farm is on the only organic farm still found at Belleville’s market, since most organic farmers in the area specialize in herbs, lettuce, and other delicate produce. Charlen Organic Farm’s stands out in particular for their garlic, the only locally grown variety still available this time of year, as well as purveyors of organic poultry, eggs, and beef.
Belleville’s Farmers’ Market is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Most farmers usually setup as early as 7:00am, though closer to 9:00am during the autumn, and run until late afternoon if business is good. The Belleville’s Farmers’ Market is located on Pinnacle Street across from Belleville’s municipal bus station. It is an out door area with two rectangular shelters that protect farmers and shoppers from the rain. There is minimal parking (parallel parking on surrounding streets, 1 hour free on Weekdays and Saturdays) but on busy days you may have to park as far as two blocks away.
